Esquire House Installation

Challenge —

In 2011, Esquire hosted a month-long party in an iconic clocktower penthouse in New York City. They asked us to collaborate with one of the event’s key sponsors, Acura, and take over a room and create playful experience inspired by Acura vehicles.

Design Solution —

We designed an interactive media table that combined sound, light, and design cues from Acura’s cars to create a one of a kind musical experience. To make it work, we built TUIO2MIDI, a custom piece of software that converts points on a multi-touch device into a range of musical tones.

Result —

Part instrument, part information design and part light play. Over the course of a month, guests visiting the Esquire Apartment came to play with the instrument, powered by the sounds of Acura vehicles and conveying visually Acura’s all wheel drive power distribution system. After the installation’s life span, we decided to let our work live on and inspire others by distributing the software behind it for free online. Check it out here.
